Skopelos

Skopelos is the second biggest of the Sporades islands, and the greenest of all, with lush vegetation.

Skopelos is the ‘green’ island of the Sporades, wooded with pine trees that sometimes grow to the waters edge. The ancient name of Skopelos was Peparithos.

Hora (Skopelos town) is a traditional island town, of a typical architectural style, with beautiful cobblestone pavements. It has been declared a traditional settlement.

Map of the region

Information:

  • Skopelos has an area of about 96 square km, is 67 km in perimeter and is the second biggest of the North Sporades islands (the biggest one is Skiros)
  • Skopelos is 6-7 km far from Skiathos (to the west) and 3-4 km away from Alonissos (to the East). It also is 60 nautical miles away from Volos, 61 nautical miles away from Agios Konstantinos port (in the prefecture of Fthiotida) and 120 nautical miles away from Thessaloniki.
  • The island has many beautiful beaches, settlements and small villages.

Infrastructure:

  • There are ports in Hora (Skopelos town), Glossa and Agnondas. Agnondas is the most leeward of the three.
  • There are ferries and hydrofoils going to Volos (through Skiathos), Agios Konstantinos and Thessaloniki.

Skopelos offers:

  • The opportunity to stay in Hora or in smaller and quieter settlements such as Agnondas or Elios.
  • A variety of accommodation choices as it has both hotel complexes and smaller hotel units.
  • Many kinds of beautiful beaches, sandy or pebbly.
  • Beaches for all tastes, both frequented and secluded ones.
  • The opportunity to combine swimming in crystal clear sea waters with exploring a green natural setting.

Suggestions:

  • Go swimming to Milia, the most popular beach of the island that is also extremely beautiful.
  • Have fish in one of the taverns in Agnontas port.
  • Take a walk to Ai Giannis church, on the northeast side of the island, and have a swim on the beach by the same name, if the weather is fine.
  • Go on an excursion to Glossa, passing through the forest, and swim on the north secluded beaches named Perivoli and Hondrogiorgis.
  • Have an evening swim on Limnonari (but be careful because the rocks at the edge of the water are slippery).
  • Swim on the scenic beaches of Stafilos and Velanio.
  • Taste ‘tiropita’ (cheese pie) at the bakery near the port (the bakery is open all day), visit the small church on the right side of the port and have a drink in one of the pubs.
  • Visit Allonisos and the Sea park, by boat. If the water is fine choose a boat trip to the skerry named Psathoura.
